How to choose the ideal wine cooler

Capacity, installation and temperature zones: the essential criteria for choosing a wine cooler.

The ideal wine cooler fits your available space and suits the way you store and serve your bottles. Start with three decisions: how many bottles you want to store, where you will install the appliance and which temperatures you need to maintain.

1. Decide on capacity

Consider the bottles you have today and leave some room for your collection to grow. Advertised capacity is usually measured using standard-format bottles; wider bottles or a different shelf arrangement may reduce the actual number.

2. Choose the installation type

A freestanding wine cooler needs the ventilation clearances specified by the manufacturer. For kitchens, models designed for under-counter or built-in column installation are available. Measure the available space, including height, width, depth and door opening, before buying.

3. Think about temperature zones

One zone may be sufficient to store a collection at a stable temperature. Two zones are useful if you want to keep wines at different temperatures, for example for serving. Check the ranges and capacity of each zone in your chosen model.

4. Compare everyday use

Look at declared noise levels, energy consumption, shelf type, protection from light and ease of access to bottles. If the wine cooler will be in a living room or open-plan kitchen, acoustic comfort may be especially important.
